I’m sorry everyone for being so slack with my posting! I have been enjoying my time here in Galápagos and am preparing for Christmas abroad once again.
As this will be my second Christmas away from home I thought I would create a list of the top 5 places to spend Christmas abroad. If you’re lucky enough to get to travel for Christmas, maybe think about stopping my one of these locations?
1. New York, USA
If you like hustle and bustle, if you like shopping, if you like snow then New York is the place for you at Christmas. Rockefeller Center is famous for their ice-skating and enormous Christmas tree, the Macy’s store has festive window displays and decorations and people freeze looking for the perfect Christmas gift. But New York City is filled with life and excitement at Christmas. Neighbourhoods have Christmas tree lots and markets, parades and small concerts. I think there is a nice feel of people coming together to celebrate and be joyous. If haven’t visited New York at Christmas time, add it to your destination list.
2. Dublin, Ireland
Dublin is a gorgeous city with so much to offer all year round but at Christmas, the city oozes charm and happiness. With the 12 Days of Christmas Market in the Docklands, Christmas Eve carols at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Temple Bar area flowing with drinks, lights and happy patrons, and of course the crazy locals going for their freezing Christmas morning swim in the sea pool, Dublin is delightful at Christmas.
3. Bondi Beach, Australia
If you’re someone who’s every Christmas is white and you’re tired of being snuggled up by a fire drinking eggnog, Australia at Christmas is the place for you. Bondi Beach in Sydney is a excellent place to relax on Christmas Eve with some friends, a few cold drinks and some beautiful sunshine. This year Australia is looking to have 40 degree temperatures throughout most states on Christmas Day so cooling off at the beach in your bikini is definitely the way to enjoy an Aussie Christmas.
4. Barcelona, Spain
A late-night party city that goes a little more crazy at Christmas, Barcelona is a great place to celebrate Christmas. La Rumbla is lit with Christmas lights, performances and markets making it even more of a tourist hub. On Christmas Day the locals participate in a swimming race across the harbour. Dressed as santas (or at least wearing santa hats) it’s a great activity to watch.
5. Midnight Mass in Vatican City, Italy
Italy is an amazing country any time of year, but seeing the Eternal City celebrating Christmas is a once in a lifetime experience. Buy roasted chestnuts on every street corner and see nativity scenes played out with both statues and live performances. Vatican City holds midnight mass at St Peter’s Basilica Christmas Eve and a midday mass Christmas Day. Thousands of Catholic pilgrams make the journey to hear the pope’s blessing each year, and it’s a truly awesome Christmas experience. Visit the Papel Audience website to get tickets.
