Over the past five months I’ve stayed at Community Hostel four times, and it has become my home away from home when I’m in Quito. I was recommended Community Hostel by other travels I’d met in South America, and all of them said it was a fantastic place to stay. I completely agree and recommend it to everyone visiting Quito, Ecuador.

Located in ‘Old Town Quito,’ Community Hostel is an oasis in the middle of this crazy city in the sky. Situated across the street from the market on Esmeraldas with smaller market stalls and food vendors all around, it’s a short walk to Plaza del Teatro and the centre of Old Town.

Community Hostel Balcony

Community Hostel has a fantastic relaxed atmosphere with incredibly friendly and helpful staff, great facilities and awesome guests. Each morning breakfast is available for USD$3 and is filling and different everyday. Consisting of eggs and potatoes, or pancakes served with a bowl a fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, tea and coffee, breakfast is a great way to start your day.

Served at a large table located on the top floor, it’s a really social time to talk with other backpackers from around the world.

Community Breakfast

Community Hostel also offers dinner each night for $5. In the same format as breakfast, dinner is a great meal with a social atmosphere in a relaxed and happy environment.

Different activities are provided each evening for guests, from movie nights in the lounge area, to pub crawls and trivia nights around Quito. There is also a free walking tour that leaves the hostel at 10am each day that anyone can join. Community Hostel is incredibly relaxed about having friends of guests participate in hostel activities. It’s not a problem if you have a friend or two join you for the activities run each evening, and all visitors to Quito even if not staying at the hostel can join in on the fun.

Community Lounge

Spread across three levels, the ground floor of the hostel is a travel agency that organises day trips to areas around Quito such as the Middle of the Earth, Otavalo and Cotapaxi. The upper two levels consist of 4, 6 and 10 bed dorms as well as private rooms., two kitchens, a lounge area and bathroom facilities.

All rooms are clean and spacious, the dorms have large bunk beds and lockable draws, with the private rooms having a queen bed, cupboards and a lockable door. Ranging in price from USD$10 per night for the 6 and 10 bed dorms to USD$30 per night for the private double room, Community Hostel is excellent value for money.

If you’re thinking of staying at Community Hostel I advise you to book ahead. Every night the hostel is usually completely booked and often have to turn people away. Each time I’ve stayed I booked 2 or 3 days in advance and have had no problems securing a bed.

So if you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Quito, try Community Hostel, you won’t be disappointed.
